Still, it has it’s place and is fun to use. If you re-import it into ArtRage though it’s now a much bigger file and the tools seem to slow down quite a bit. I especially like the gobs of paint put down by the “brush” tool, and find myself using the “roller” a lot just for rough in. You can re-export it back to Painter or Photoshop as a psd and up the dpi to 300 or whatever you work with. Keep it at 72dpi for initial workup as that’s standard for the program. To get around this make a canvas size you wish to use (in Photoshop or Painter) and “import” it into ArtRage. I recently purchased ArtRage2 and find it good for working up an idea, but not for finish as it only works 72dpi and canvas size is fixed. ArtRage never pretents to be a competitor to Painter or Photoshop-that’s just your false pre-conception. Why? ArtRage is great as a ‘sketch’ pad for working up ideas because you can focus on the concepts that you are trying to get out to ‘paper’.

I will have spent more time futzing with the software than actually painting but I sure am learning a lot. When I finally finish this painting I’ll post it. It is V1 (of sketchbook) that I’m using so I’m glad to hear they worked the kinks out of it. It was very cluttered compared to sketchbook pro. I didn’t like the way the brush ran out of paint. I tried the free version of artrage and I can’t say I was impressed.
If you get Version 2 its all fixed and works just like PSD layers. Though version 1 had problems saving in TIFFs. I personally didnt like ArtRage so id suggest try first and not just go with the flow.

OpenCanvas is a mix of the best features of Photoshop and Painter, quite easy to use and simple.īTW You can download the pluss version and itll work as a trial for some days, so you can check it out without problems. Verision 1.1 is Free and Version 4 Pluss is only worth 75$ (which is the one i have)
If you want to paint, I would suggest OpenCanvas.

Sketchbook pro is mostly for Sketching and is great at that, i use it only for drawing and doodling since i like how it simulates pencils and since i have to deliver images quikly i cant loose time scanning, etc. though version 1 had problems saving in TIFFs. Layers mergin might ocurr if you save in other format than TIFF. I rarelly get the program stuck but when it happends is because i hit the wrong keys and i just have to press either ESC or Enter and it unstucks. Sketchbook Pro v2 is the one I use and havent had any prolems with it.
